This multi-site tape method estimates body fat from neck and waist circumference, plus hips for females, using the validated US Navy circumference equation. The Army long used the same multi-site approach for the body composition standards in AR 600-9, but the 2023 revision moved to a single abdominal (one-site) measurement. Treat this as an estimate of the legacy method, not the current standard.

Why it's an estimate
The tape test gets mocked a lot, and some of that is fair. It is crude on purpose, and the reasons behind that design tell you exactly how much weight to put on your number.
Why a tape measure at all
A military has to screen tens of thousands of people a year, often in the field, with kit that fits in a pocket and a procedure anyone can be trained on in an afternoon. DEXA scanners and hydrostatic tanks are more accurate and completely impractical at that scale. Circumference methods need no power, cost almost nothing, take two minutes, and were validated against underwater weighing when they were developed, so they land close enough on average to sort a large group. Cheap, fast and field-usable over precise is the entire design brief, and it is also why the method travels so well into everyday use.
Which formula this actually runs
Straight with you on this one: what runs here is the US Navy circumference equation from Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984, using neck and waist, plus hips for women, against your height. The Army used a comparable multi-site tape approach for the body composition standards in AR 600-9 for decades, which is why the two get treated as the same thing online. That changed in the 2023 revision of AR 600-9, which moved to a single abdominal measurement. So treat this as an estimate of the legacy multi-site method, not the current Army standard, and never as an official result. An official tape is taken by a person, not a web page.
A worked example
Take a man 5 foot 9, so 69 inches, with a 15.5 inch neck and a 34 inch waist. Waist minus neck gives 18.5. The equation takes 86.01 times the base-10 logarithm of 18.5, subtracts 70.041 times the logarithm of 69, then adds 36.76, which comes out at about 17 percent. Add a single inch at the waist, to 35, and the estimate climbs to roughly 18.9 percent. One inch of tape is worth close to two points, which is the best argument I can give you for measuring carefully.
Where the tape goes
Because the whole estimate rides on waist minus neck, placement is not a detail, it is most of the result.
- Neck: just below the larynx, snug, sloping slightly down in front.
- Waist: at the navel for men, narrowest point for women.
- Hips, for women: around the widest point, feet together.
- Keep the tape level and flat, without pulling it tight.
- Measure at the end of a normal exhale, relaxed, not braced.
- Take each site twice and average, same time of day each time.
What this number is and is not for
It is good for one thing in particular: a cheap, repeatable estimate you can retake every few weeks to see which way things are moving. It is not a verdict on you. The bands here are general body fat ranges, not any service pass mark, and military standards exist to administer a policy for a specific job rather than to grade a person.
