This method, based on Grant (1980), compares wrist circumference to height and classes your skeletal frame as small, medium, or large. Larger frames naturally carry more bone and muscle mass.

Frame size is one of the most over-claimed numbers in fitness, so here is the honest version: what it is really estimating, where the method came from, and the one job it genuinely does well.

What it is measuring

Your wrist is mostly bone, tendon, and skin. There is very little muscle there and almost no fat, so its circumference barely moves whether you are lean or carrying extra weight, and that stability is the whole idea. Compared against your height it gives a rough proxy for how broadly your skeleton is built. Elbow breadth, measured with calipers across the bones of a bent elbow, is the other common method and is the one the original charts used. Neither one is measuring muscle or fat. They are estimating the frame those things hang on.

Where the method came from

Frame size comes out of the Metropolitan Life height and weight tables, built from life insurance policyholder data and published in 1959 and again in 1983. Those tables listed a desirable weight range for each height in three columns, small, medium, and large frame, with frame judged by elbow breadth. It was the era of the ideal weight chart, when a single target weight was the way people were told to think about their bodies. The wrist ratio this tool uses is the pocket version of that idea, easier to measure and no more precise.

A worked example

Say you are 5 foot 10, which is 70 inches, and your wrist measures 7 inches. Divide 70 by 7 and the ratio is 10.0, which falls inside the 9.6 to 10.4 band and reads as a medium frame for men. Now measure half an inch narrower, at 6.5 inches, and the ratio jumps to 10.8 and the label flips to small. That is how tight these bands are. A slightly different tape position can change your category, which tells you how much weight the category deserves.

What it does not explain

Frame accounts for far less of the difference in what people weigh than most of us would like it to. Muscle mass, body fat, and simple height account for much more, and the plus or minus 10 percent adjustment is a rule of thumb inherited from those old charts rather than something derived from a modern dataset. In practice frame size usually gets used to explain a number away or to dismiss it, and it is not strong enough to do either job. It is context, not an argument.

The one job it does well

Frame size is at its best when it stops you reading an ideal weight figure as a single target. Those formulas return one number for your height, and knowing you are broader or narrower framed turns that number back into the range it always should have been, with a few pounds of room on either side. Pair it with your body fat percentage, which actually responds to what you eat and how you train, and let the frame reading be what it is: a fixed detail about your build that you measure once and never think about again.

Tips

Measure your wrist at the narrowest point, just below the wrist bone, with a flexible tape. Once is enough; frame size doesn't change.
