This tool compares your daily caffeine against the FDA-recommended limit of 400mg for most adults, using common source amounts like coffee (~95mg/cup) and espresso (~63mg/shot). It also flags roughly 6mg per kg of bodyweight, a common rule of thumb rather than an official figure, so smaller people get a warning before they hit 400mg. Individual tolerance, medications, and timing all matter.

Adding up milligrams is the easy half. The half that changes anything is understanding what caffeine is doing in there, and why the coffee you had at four in the afternoon is still in your system at midnight.

It does not make energy, it hides tiredness

Adenosine is a molecule that builds up in your brain across the day, and as it accumulates and binds to its receptors you feel progressively more tired. Caffeine works because it is shaped enough like adenosine to sit in those receptors without switching them on. The adenosine keeps piling up behind it. Nothing has been added to your tank. You have muted the gauge, and when the caffeine clears you feel the whole backlog at once. That is the afternoon crash, and it is worth knowing it is not a deficiency of more caffeine.

Where the 400mg figure comes from

The number this tool measures you against is the FDA's consumer guidance: for most healthy adults, around 400mg a day is not generally associated with negative effects. European food safety regulators landed in the same place. It is a population-level ceiling, not a target to hit and not a line that turns dangerous one milligram past it. If you are pregnant, taking any medication, or living with a heart condition, the honest answer is that this calculator is the wrong place to get your number. That is a conversation for your doctor.

A worked example

Two 8 oz cups of coffee at about 95mg each is 190mg. Add one scoop of a typical pre-workout at 200mg and you are at 390mg, which the tool reads as 98 percent of the daily reference. At 180 pounds that works out to roughly 4.8mg per kilogram of bodyweight. Nothing alarming, but it does mean a single energy drink later in the evening pushes the day well past the ceiling, and most people are genuinely surprised by which item on that list was the expensive one.

The half life, and your sleep

This is the most useful thing on the page. Caffeine has a half life of roughly five to six hours, so half of it is still circulating that long after you drank it. A 95mg coffee at 4pm leaves about 48mg in you at 10pm and about 24mg at four in the morning. In one sleep-lab study, 400mg taken a full six hours before bed still cost participants over an hour of sleep, and they largely did not notice it had. Sleep quality degrades quietly. If yours is poor, the sleep cycle tool and an earlier cutoff are worth trying before anything else.

Tolerance, and how much people differ

Regular use builds tolerance within days as your brain adds adenosine receptors to compensate, which is why the same dose stops working and why skipping it brings a headache. That withdrawal is a normal physiological response, not a character flaw. And the variation between people here is enormous: the liver enzyme CYP1A2 handles most caffeine clearance, and common genetic variants make some people fast metabolizers and others slow enough that an afternoon cup ruins the night. Other variants track with caffeine-driven jitters and anxiety. Your own experience beats any average, so use the total as a starting point and pay attention to timing, especially around training.
