Your dynamometer reading is converted to kilograms and placed against the published 20th, 50th, 80th, and 95th percentiles for your sex and five-year age band. Those four columns are what the source prints, so those are the only cut points I classify against. There is no published 25th or 75th, so I do not claim one.
The norms pool 2.4 million adults from 69 countries and regions, adjusted to one reference protocol: hydraulic dynamometer, seated, elbow flexed, forearm neutral, handle sized to the hand, both hands tested, three squeezes per hand, best single reading. A different device or a different posture shifts the number, so a reading taken another way is not strictly comparable. The comparison is population data for context, not a health assessment.
Grip gets talked about as if it were a crystal ball, and it is not. Here is the plain version: what the reading measures, how I place it against the published table, and how much weight the research actually supports putting on it.
What the reading measures
A hand-grip dynamometer measures one thing: how hard you can squeeze, once, with maximum effort. That is a narrow test, but it is easy to standardise and hard to fake, which is why researchers have collected so much of it, and it tends to travel with how strong you are everywhere else. Posture and device matter more than most people expect. The percentiles here were adjusted to one protocol, seated with the elbow bent, three hard squeezes per hand, best single reading kept, so a number taken any other way is not strictly comparable.
A worked example
Say you are a 42-year-old man and your best squeeze reads 110 pounds. That converts to about 49.9 kg, because the table is published in kilograms and the comparison happens there. Your age lands in the 40 to 44 band, where the published values are 40.4 kg at the 20th percentile, 48.8 kg at the 50th, 57.1 kg at the 80th, and 65.1 kg at the 95th. Your 49.9 kg clears the median and falls short of the 80th, so the tool reports Above Average, in the 50th to 80th percentile range. Converted back to pounds, that same row reads under 89, 89 to 108, 108 to 126, 126 to 144, and above 144.
How the bands are cut
The source prints four percentile columns, the 20th, 50th, 80th, and 95th, so those are the only cut points I classify against. There is no published 25th or 75th, so I do not invent one. Bands shift with age on purpose: the male median is 49.7 kg in the 30 to 34 band and 37.7 kg in the 70 to 74 band, roughly 110 pounds against 83. Strength drops across a lifespan in the population data, so the same squeeze that reads average at 32 can read excellent at 72. If you are under 20 the table has no row for you, so I compare you against the youngest published band and say so on the result.
What the research supports
Grip strength shows up constantly in population research as a general marker of muscular strength and of how people age, and the norms I use here, Tomkinson and colleagues in 2025, pool 2.4 million adults across 69 countries and regions. What that literature reports is associations: across large groups, lower grip tends to travel with poorer health outcomes, particularly in older adults. That is a pattern in populations, not a diagnosis and not a forecast for you. It also does not show that training your hands harder changes those outcomes. Grip most likely tags along with overall health rather than steering it, so treat a low reading as a prompt to train generally.
What to do with your number
Use it as a baseline and retest on the same device in four to six weeks, since switching dynamometers moves the number more than a month of training does. If the reading is low and grip is what quits first on your pulls, that is worth fixing directly with hangs and carries. Then check it against a strength number that involves your whole body, like your one rep max, and against a conditioning marker like your VO2 max. Those three together say far more than a squeeze alone. If a reading genuinely worries you, that is a conversation for a doctor, not a calculator.

Train grip 2-3x per week with dead hangs, farmer's carries, or towel pull-ups. If grip limits your deadlift, use straps for working sets and train grip separately. Retest on the same dynamometer, since switching devices changes the reading more than a month of training does.
