Why it's an estimate
The clock is exact. The number you put into it is not. Rest guidance comes from group averages and arrives as a range, so the useful skill is picking a sensible number, holding it honestly, and letting your next set tell you whether it was right.
Why a timer beats counting
Rest estimated by feel drifts, and it drifts in both directions in the same session. Between the hard sets it runs short, because standing still while you are out of breath feels much longer than it is. Once the phone comes out it runs long, and a ninety second rest quietly becomes four minutes. Neither is a discipline problem, it is just that people are poor clocks. Setting the number turns rest from something you feel into something you chose, which is the only way it becomes a variable you can actually adjust rather than noise sitting on top of every other number in the session.
Picking a preset
The presets map onto the usual guidance. Thirty to sixty seconds suits light, high rep work. Sixty to one hundred and twenty seconds is the common base for hypertrophy work in the six to twelve rep range. Heavy strength work, roughly one to five reps, asks for three to five minutes, and compound lifts want the upper end of whatever bracket they fall in because a squat fatigues far more of you than a curl does. Why it keeps time with the screen off
Browsers throttle or pause timers in a tab you are not looking at, so a timer that counts down one tick at a time falls behind the moment you lock the phone or switch apps. That is a problem for a rest timer in particular, because a rest timer is used precisely while nobody is watching it. This one stamps the wall clock when you press start and reads the real time on every tick, so a skipped or throttled tick costs nothing and the display is correct the instant you look back. Pausing works the same way: the paused seconds never count against the rest, because resuming stamps a fresh end from what was left.
What to do with the rest
Spend the first part setting up the next set, loading the bar, and getting your breathing back under control, and the rest of it doing very little. Light movement for something the working set did not use is fine. Adding a second hard exercise in the gap is a different decision, not a free one: pairing two movements back to back is a superset, and it works when they do not compete, a row with a chest press rather than two heavy squat patterns. Doing it by accident, on the other hand, just means neither set got its rest.
Where the number stops being precise
Every bracket above is a range because the research behind it is built on group averages, and recovery between sets varies with sleep, training age, how much of you the lift involves, and how close to failure the last set went. The honest test is the next set. If the reps hold at the same weight and the form still looks like the first set, the rest was long enough. If they fall away across the session, add thirty seconds before you take weight off the bar. Hold the rest steady when you are comparing one week to the next, or you will not know whether the change came from the training or the clock. And if you feel unwell between sets rather than simply tired, stop and talk to a doctor.
