Compound lifts ramp from the empty bar in even 10 point steps, 50, 60, 70, then 80 percent of your working weight, with reps dropping as load climbs and any step lighter than the bar skipped. Isolation lifts skip the bar and get two sets, 50 percent for 10 and 70 percent for 5. It prepares muscles, joints, and movement patterns for heavy loads.
Warm-up sets are not the workout. They are the on-ramp, and a good one gets you under your top set feeling sharper rather than softer. Here is what the ramp is actually doing and how I would bend it around the day you are having.
What the ramp is really for
Two jobs, and neither of them is fatigue. The first is rehearsal: you are running the exact groove you are about to load, so your bar path, bracing, and foot pressure are already sorted before the weight gets serious. The second is priming, waking up the nervous system so it recruits hard from the first working rep instead of the third set. Both of those are cheap. Neither needs you to grind. Every warm-up set should finish with plenty left, well short of failure, because anything you spend here is not available later.
A worked example
Say a 225 lb bench as a compound lift. The tool gives you the empty bar at 45 lbs for 10, then 115 for 5, 135 for 3, 160 for 2, and 180 for a single, before your working sets at 225. That is five warm-up sets, about 1,930 lbs of total warm-up volume, and roughly seven and a half minutes with rest. Notice how the reps fall as the plates go on. Ten, five, three, two, one. The early sets are there to move blood and rehearse; the late ones are there to feel the load.
Why the reps fall near the top
The steps stay even, ten percentage points at a time, but the reps fall away as you climb because that is where the movement starts to change. At half your working weight the bar barely resists you; at 80 percent your setup has to be right. Fewer reps on each heavier step let you feel that shift instead of colliding with it. The same logic caps the last warm-up. If it lands too close to your working weight, it stops being a warm-up and becomes a working set you did not plan, and you pay for it on the ones that count. Around 80 percent for one or two easy reps is close enough to feel heavy and far enough to cost nothing.
General versus specific
A general warm-up is five to ten minutes of easy cardio and some movement to raise your temperature and get joints moving. A specific warm-up is the ramp above, the actual lift at lighter loads. The specific part is doing most of the work, and honestly, static stretching before heavy lifting is the part I would drop. Holding a stretch for a minute can leave you feeling looser without leaving you stronger, and it is not what prepares you for the bar. Save it for after, or replace it with dynamic movement.
Adjusting for the day
On a heavy day, add a step rather than a rep. More small jumps near the top, singles and doubles instead of sets of five, longer rest between the last two. On a lighter day, or a second exercise hitting muscles you already warmed, cut the ramp to two or three sets and get on with it. Keep reps low as weight climbs so you don't tire yourself out before working sets, resting 60-90 seconds between. Most important before heavy compounds: squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press.
