Workout density is total volume load divided by session duration. Raising it, by shortening rest or using supersets, is a valid form of progressive overload beyond adding weight.
Density is work divided by time, which makes it the one training number where a higher score is not automatically a better session. Whether you want it to go up depends entirely on what you are training for, so here is how to read it honestly.
What density measures
Density is your volume load divided by how long the session took. This tool builds the volume from your total reps times your average weight per rep. If you enter total reps directly, your set count only feeds the sets per minute figure; if you enter average reps per set, the set count multiplies out to your total reps, so it moves density too. The classification bands are set in pounds per minute, under 500 for low, 500 to 1,000 for moderate, 1,000 to 2,000 for high, and 2,000 and above for very high, and they convert when you switch to kilograms. Treat them as rough scenery, not targets.
A worked example
Take a 60 minute session of 20 sets, 200 total reps, at an average of 135 pounds per rep. That is 27,000 pounds of volume load, divided by 60 minutes, so 450 pounds per minute. The tool calls that low density, along with 3.33 reps per minute and 0.33 sets per minute. Now do the exact same 20 sets and 200 reps at the same weight in 45 minutes instead. The work is identical, but density becomes 600 pounds per minute and the label flips to moderate. Nothing about the training changed. Only the rest did. That is the whole character of this number, and it is why it can only be compared to your own past sessions of the same work.
When density is worth raising
Two situations. The first is conditioning, where the point is keeping your heart rate up and your rest short, and density is a fair way to confirm you are doing that. The second is a genuinely busy week, where you have 30 minutes instead of an hour and you want to know how much real work you can still fit in. A circuit of 30 sets, 360 total reps at 60 pounds, done in 30 minutes, is 21,600 pounds and 720 pounds per minute. That is a lot of work packed into half an hour, and on a week where the alternative was skipping the session entirely, packing it in is a clear win.
When a lower number is the right answer
If your goal is maximal strength, long rest is not wasted time. It is the training. Your body needs several minutes between heavy sets to restore the energy system that powers a near maximal effort, and cutting that rest means the next set is lighter or sloppier, which is the opposite of what you came to do. Five sets of 3 at 315 pounds over 50 minutes is 4,725 pounds and 94.5 pounds per minute, which this tool labels low density. That light circuit above scored nearly eight times higher. The circuit was not the better session. It was a different session. Rushing loaded barbell work to beat a clock is also a reliable way to let your form slip when you are already tired, and no number on this page is worth that.
How to raise it without wrecking the session
If density is the right goal for your current block, raise it in ways that add work rather than subtract quality. Pair exercises that do not compete, an upper body movement with a lower body one, so one rests while the other works. Trim rest 15 seconds at a time instead of halving it, and use rest period guidance to decide where you have room. Keep the same exercises and loads from session to session so the change reflects real added work. And check the numerator as well as the ratio: if volume load is falling while density climbs, you did less work faster, not more work better. Keeping the weight moving up over a block, using progressive overload, matters more than shaving minutes off the clock.
Use supersets, tri-sets, or shorter rest periods during hypertrophy or conditioning phases. Compare session to session so the increase reflects real added work rather than rushed form.
