How many steps a day to lose weight?
For a 180 lb person walking at a moderate pace (about 3 mph)
- A common baseline (5,000 steps)
- about 240 calories
- A solid target (8,000 steps)
- 384 calories
- 10,000 steps
- about 480 calories
- Extra burn going from 5k to 10k
- about 240 a day

There is nothing magic about 10,000 steps, but the target is a good one because walking is the most underrated lever in fat loss. It burns calories without eating into your recovery the way hard cardio can, and it survives a busy week better than a scheduled gym session.
The example shows what the steps are worth. For a 180 pound person, going from a sedentary 5,000 a day up to 10,000 adds roughly 240 calories a day. Across a week that is about 1,700 calories, in the neighborhood of half a pound of fat, on top of whatever your diet is doing. Heavier people burn a bit more per step, lighter people a bit less.
Here is the useful reframe: steps do most of what people think dedicated cardio is for, at a lower cost. So before you add a running program, add a walk. Park farther away, take stairs, walk on calls. Small increases compound over a week.
Steps do not replace the calorie side of things. You still lose fat because you are eating under maintenance, and steps make that deficit easier to reach and hold. Think of them as the assist, not the whole play.
