Volume load (also called tonnage) is weight × reps × sets, summed across the session. It is a simple tally of total mechanical work, useful as a scoreboard you can beat over time rather than a number with a right answer.
Volume load is one of the most useful numbers in training and one of the easiest to game. It is a good progress marker and a bad target, and the difference between those two things is worth spelling out before you start chasing it.
What the number actually is
Volume load, sometimes called tonnage, is sets times reps times weight. Each exercise you enter multiplies out on its own, then every row is added together for the session total, and total reps are counted alongside it so you can see how much of the total came from doing more work rather than lifting more weight. That is the whole calculation. Rows you leave completely blank are skipped, and the tool wants at least half a pound per rep, so pure bodyweight sets do not fit unless you enter your bodyweight as the load.
A worked example
Say you bench press 4 sets of 8 at 185 pounds and leg press 3 sets of 12 at 300 pounds. The bench is 32 reps and 5,920 pounds. The leg press is 36 reps and 10,800 pounds. Your session total is 16,720 pounds across 68 reps. Come back a few weeks later, bench the same 4 sets of 8 at 195 and leg press the same 3 sets of 12 at 320, and the total becomes 17,760 pounds, roughly 6 percent more. Same sets, same reps, more weight on the bar. That is the version of a rising number I actually care about.
Why chasing the number backfires
Here is the problem. Take that same 16,720 pound session and bolt on 3 sets of 15 lateral raises at 20 pounds. That is 900 more pounds of volume load, a total of 17,620, a 5.4 percent jump. On the scoreboard it looks almost identical to the honest progress above, and it cost you nothing but ten extra minutes of easy work. The arithmetic rewards whatever is cheapest: more sets, higher reps, lighter loads. If you train for the number you will drift toward padding sessions with junk sets, which raises fatigue and time cost without buying you much in return. Let the number report on your training. Do not let it design your training.
Why you cannot compare across exercises
Volume load has no units of effort, only units of weight, so it treats every pound as identical no matter how it was moved. Four sets of 10 leg presses at 250 pounds is 10,000 pounds of volume load. Five sets of 10 overhead presses at 65 pounds is 3,250 pounds. The leg press reads more than three times bigger, and for most people the overhead press session was the harder one. To match 10,000 pounds on that overhead press you would need about 154 reps. So do not rank exercises by tonnage, do not compare your total against someone else, and be careful reading a session total that mixes leg work with upper body work, because the legs will dominate it every time.
The honest way to use it
Track one exercise against itself over weeks. Same lift, same rep range, same effort level, and watch whether the number creeps up. Adding 5 to 10 percent over a training block is a reasonable pace, and when you stall for a couple of weeks a deload usually beats grinding. If you want the weight on the bar to be what moves, plan it with progressive overload and check your estimated one rep max so you know the strength is real. And if you want to know how much time that work took, run the same session through workout density, which divides this number by your session length.
Adding 5 to 10% volume across a training block is a reasonable pace, and deload when you can't add more. Compare across blocks to confirm you're trending upward.
