Yes, and it is called body recomposition. It works best for three groups: true beginners, people returning after a long break, and anyone carrying a fair bit of body fat. If that is you, your body has enough room to build muscle and shed fat at the same time.

The example shows what it looks like on paper. A 180 pound beginner around 28 percent body fat, aiming for 22, has about 14 pounds of fat to lose. At a patient, steady pace that is roughly four months. The projection holds lean mass steady, so the scale drops about 14 pounds and all of it is fat. A true beginner often does a little better than that and adds some muscle on top, which slows the scale further while the shape keeps changing.

That last part is why recomp confuses people who only watch the scale. Progress hides. The number might barely move some weeks even as your shape changes, because muscle you are adding partly offsets fat you are losing. This is exactly when the scale lies and photos, tape measurements, and how your clothes fit tell the truth.

How you set it up: eat at or a touch below maintenance, push protein high, and lift with progression. Patience is the price of admission. Recomp is slower than a straight cut on the scale, but you come out leaner and stronger instead of just lighter.

Put your weight and body fat into the projection to see your own version.
